Barbara Gauthier Biography

Barbara Gauthier is an Emmy Award-winning journalist working for WTVM News Leader 9 since joining the station in September 2008.  She came in as the Evening Anchor for the station’s 5, 5:30, 6, and 11 pm newscasts. Earlier, she was working at NBC affiliate WKYC an NBC affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio as Morning Anchor.

Gauthier went to Harris County High School in Hamilton and then joined Mercer University in Macon, where she received a bachelor’s degree in Communications. She hails from Harris County, Georgia and it is there that she first worked after graduating from college before coming back to the Chattahoochee Valley. Barbara has now worked for over 25 years in television as an anchor and reporter.

Even before working in Cleveland, Barbara was serving in Washington D-C as the Primary Anchor and Chief National Correspondent for BET (Black Entertainment Television). She is in fact the one who launched its nightly national newscast in 2000. That was after she had left WXIA-NBC in Atlanta where she was working as the Weekend Anchor and a reporter. Barbara covered so many major stories when she was working in Atlanta, for instance, she covered the Centennial Olympic Park bombing and the 1996 Olympic Games.

In addition, Barbara was also working at ABC station KOCO in Oklahoma City as the Morning Anchor. In fact, it is while working here that she was honored with very many awards for her covering the Oklahoma City Bombing. Further, The National Association of Black Journalists recognized her with their highest award for outstanding reporting. She has worked in many other television and radio stations in Connecticut, Texas,  as well as in Georgia.

WTVM Newsleader 9 Evening team with the input of Barbara was honored with a National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Southeast Emmy nomination in 2019. This was for being the Best Newscasters especially because of their coverage during Hurricane Michael. Within the same year, Barbara was inducted into the NATAS – Emmy Silver Circle. This is usually reserved for journalists who have excelled in television news for 25 years or more.

Barbara is now on the Board of Directors of the Southeast Chapter of NATAS. She spends a lot of her time on issues and organizations that support the needy people in the community. For over 10 years, she has hosted the annual luncheon for Hope Harbour which shelters victims of domestic violence.  In addition, she works annually with organizations like the Chattahoochee Council of Boy Scouts of America. She also works with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley among many other groups that support the youth.
