Brian Wilkes Career

Wilkes went to Columbia College where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in science communication. After graduating from college, he took a two-and-a-half internship at WGN-9 (Chicago), under Meteorologist Tom Skilling. He then started his career as the chief meteorologist at his first station WSJV-TV. It is now the Fox Affiliate in Elkhart, Ind., he worked in their 6 and 10 p.m. shows. During his time at WSJV, Brian produced, wrote, and hosted a documentary on the Palm Sunday tornadoes that ripped through South Bend in April of 1965.

In 2001, Brian showed his playful side when he hosted and sang with his own orchestra during the “Singin’, Swingin’ Holiday Special”, which featured various musical artists from around Central Indiana. Apart from forecasting the weather, Brian also enjoys teaching. In fact, during his free time, you will find him visiting central Indiana schools. You’ll also see him active in his community, often lending his time and talents to various charitable organizations.

In addition, his love for the weather started early, when he was in 4th grade. As he grew up on the far south side of Chicago, the 1979 blizzard kept him out of school for2 good weeks! As such, his excitement for the weather increased and it continues to grow to date. On the other hand, Brian is a member of both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. Further, he received his Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association in August of 1996.

During his time in Indianapolis, he was honored with numerous awards. For instance, Brian was awarded an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1996. This was for his severe weather special “Blown Away,” which he hosted and co-produced.
