Bridget Chavez Biography

Bridget Chavez is an American two-Emmy-Award- winning journalist currently working as a full-time reporter at KIRO 7 News covering and reporting on news of the day as well as working on special projects that are longer-form pieces. Joining the station in August 2022, she was previously a full-time reporter at KPTV Fox 12 Oregon in Portland, Oregon since June 2020. Chavez is so passionate about storytelling and truly believes that every person has a story to tell. Moreover, Bridget has always been a writer and she absolutely loves interacting with people, hearing and sharing their stories. She has spent a couple of years in the classroom after undergrad and while she enjoyed teaching, Chavez’s true passion is storytelling.

As an alum of The University of New Mexico, Chavez graduated with a double Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science in 2014. After her undergraduate degrees, Bridget attended Loyola Marymount University where she attained her Master of Arts in Special Education and Teaching in 2016. Subsequently, she also enrolled at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University obtaining her Master of Science in Broadcast and Digital Journalism in 2017. From September 2014 to April 2016, Chavez was a Front Desk volunteer at USO.

While still in her college, Bridget interned at the Office of Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) in Washington D.C from Januray 2013 for 5 months. From May 2013 to July 2013, she was a junior producer at TODAY Show Australia in Sydney, Australia. Additionally, Chavez moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in August 2013 where she worked as a broadcasting intern at KOAT Action 7 News. Bridget as well served as a 2014 Corps Member for Teach For America in San Francisco Bay Area since June 2014 where she taught students with special needs for 2 years and a month.

2016

From August 2016 for about a year and 11 months, she was a resource specialist at Alum Rock School District in San Jose, California. Furthermore, Bridget moved to Syracuse, New York Area in September 2016 where she served as a sports broadcast intern at NewsChannel 9 WSYR for 4 months. Still in Syracuse, New York, Chavez worked as a sports news anchor and reporter at NCC News where she would anchor evening newscasts. In addition, she also generated story ideas, wrote, shot, produced and edited sports and news stories.

After workling at NCC News for a year and a month since July 2016, Bridget became an on-filed host of Syracuse Chiefs Baseball Club from April 2017 for 4 months. Moving to Washington, District Of Columbia, Chavez worked as a reporting intern at KNWA-TV and Fox 24 News (NBC and Fox affiliate) since July 2017 for 2 months. Afterward, Bridget became a multimedia journalist at KOLO 8 in Reno, Nevada  from October 2017 and later a fulltime reporter at KPTV Fox 12 Oregon from June 2020 to July 2022.

Chavez came to Seattle after reporting for KPTV Fox 12 Oregon in Portland and before that at KOLO 8 in Reno, Nevada. In her career, Bridget has made coverage of major news events, extensively covering the Portland protests and riots of 2020, Oregon’s historic wildfires of 2020, and the ice storm of 2021. From major breaking news to community impact stories, she has as well had extensive storytelling experience and is a two-time Emmy award-winning journalist. As an avid runner, she has run two marathons and plans to do more, as she also enjoys snowboarding, paddleboarding, rock climbing, hiking, and reading.
