After graduating from Brooklyn College, he started working at CBS2 News in New York City as a desk assistant. He held his first on-air position with WVNS 59News in Ghent, West Virginia, as an evening anchor. Dan was honored by the West Virginia Broadcasters Association while working in the mountain state for his best general assignment reporting and best breaking news coverage.
On WOWK’s “West Virginia Tonight,” where he oversaw the regional team, Dan covered the opioid crisis, famous legal cases, a teacher strike across the state, and a 1,000-year flood. Dan spoke with a number of prominent corporate and political personalities, including Senator Bernie Sanders of the United States. The narratives that highlight good deeds in the community are his favorites. He accompanied a man conveying a message across the drug addiction industry in a vehicle called a “heroin hearse.” He also had the pleasure of meeting Cooper, a 6-year-old kid who was given a new lease on life after receiving a 3-D printed hand.
Thorn worked as a desk assistant at WCBS-TV in 2012, conducting pre-interviews, visiting police stations, and looking up information online and in video archives to support reporters’ stories. Thorn contributed a video to network affiliates and assisted in organizing satellite feeds and windows for live shoots. He supported the news managers by editing teases and cut-ins for the noon newscasts and distributing scripts to the control room and studio for the four live newscasts every day. He likes to watch sports (Go Yanks!) and movies, go on vacation, work out, and listen to music in his free time.
