Martin is an alum who graduated from Yale University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and initiated his journalism career as a researcher for CBS News in New York in 1969. Later, he became a news writer with the AP broadcast wire from 1971 to 1972 and a fellow at the Washington Journalism Center in 1973. Martin has been working as CBS News national security correspondent since 1993, covering the Pentagon and the State Department. David has reported almost every major defense, intelligence, and international affairs story for the CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes, and 48 Hours.  In the invasion of Afghanistan and the war in Iraq, his knowledge of how the state department, intelligence community, and military operations, both on the battlefield and in Washington placed him as a big reporter for CBS News.

David was the first to report that the United States was launching a strike on a palace bunker in southern Baghdad in order to attempt to take out Saddam Hussein. Moreover, he also depicted the military’s shock and awe strategy for its first strike on Baghdad.  In May 2003 in Iraq, he was the first journalist to visit and report on Dora Farms, where Saddam was said to have been hiding. Earlier, Martin made coverage of defense and intelligence matters for Newsweek magazine from its Washington bureau from 1977 to 1983. Regardless, Martin has won several Emmys, his recent one being in 2012 for his story Starting Over. Likewise, he has also bagged two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards, 2002 and 2004. He also secured the 2004 Joan S. Barone Award for excellence in Washington-based national affairs and public policy reporting. It was awarded by the Washington Radio & Television Correspondents’ Association. After joining CBS News as its Pentagon correspondent in 1983, David’s duties later expanded to include the State Department and intelligence beats. Additionally, Martin is the author of the book Wilderness of Mirrors: Intrigue, Deception and the Secrets That Destroyed Two of the Cold War’s Most Important Agents. The book is an account of the secret wars between the CIA and KGB. The second book is  Best Laid Plans: The Inside Story of America’s War Against Terrorism. Moreover, David served during the Vietnam War as a naval officer.
