Together with former stockbroker Derek Peterson, Mann established the hydroponics shop weGrow in January 2010. In order to sell hydroponics equipment, Mann and Peterson leased a supply store in Oakland, California, with plans to create franchises in eight additional states.
Early in 2011, the weGrow store was shut down when Peterson sued the company over unpaid payments and accused Mann of conducting a “hydroponzi scheme” in an interview with Mother Jones. Mann successfully countersued Peterson for a monetary settlement and shares in Peterson’s own company after Peterson was accused of making the charges in revenge for Mann’s decision to reduce their partnership by a spokeswoman for Mann.
For allegedly scamming a city beautification program in 2008 and 2009 while running his real estate business MannEdge Properties, Mann was accused in 2012 of thirteen felonies of fraud. In August 2013, the accusations were lowered by the prosecution to five felony counts, and Mann pled not guilty to all five counts later that year. He received a five-year probationary term, a $10,000 fine, and restitution obligations. In 2021, Mann revealed to The New York Times that the conviction has since been erased.
