Berman was educated at Phillips Academy Andover Highschool, which he left in 1990. following high school, he went to study for his degree at  Harvard University, from which he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies. In late 1995, Berman joined ABC news and served as the network’s correspondent for over 16 years until 2012. At ABC News,  John started as a desk assistant working the overnight shift. From 1997 to 1999, he was the head writer for “World News Tonight With Peter Jennings.” He traveled with Peter Jennings to the Columbine school shooting that happened in Colorado, and to Cuba for the pope’s historic visit. Additionally, he worked with Peter Jennings throughout President Clinton’s impeachment hearings.

In 1999 and 2000, Berman served as an off-air reporter for ABC News covering George W. Bush’s presidential campaign and followed George Bush to 45 states through his first months in the White House. Moreover, John covered life-changing stories like the war in Iraq, the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the steroid scandal in American sports, and the Indian Ocean tsunami. Concurrently, he interviewed newsmakers like Barak Obama, Lionel Richie, Mc Hammer, and the former prime minister of Iraq, Saddam Hussein. He also covered the 2008 presidential campaign, where he followed Republican candidates, Senator John Mc Cain, governor Mitt Romney as well as then-Senator Barak Obama and then-senator Dick Durbin of Illinois.
