John Farley is an Emmy Award-Winning Meteorologist working as the Chief Meteorologist for ABC Columbia. Previously, John was working at the NBC Affiliate in Columbia as the Chief Meteorologist for 5 straight years. Farley’s experience in this career runs for over 20 years.
John Farley Education
Farley went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (BBA) in Finance. In addition, he joined San Jose State University and graduated with a Master of Science (MS) in Meteorology.
John Farley Career
Farley went to San Jose State University, in San Jose, California, where he graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Meteorology. Further, he received the honor of Graduate of the Last Decade from the College of Science in the same university in 2001. While John was still in Graduate School, he worked with a team at San Francisco International Airport to create mathematical models that forecast the fog. They did so well that they actually, got the Excellence in Aviation Award from the FAA in 2002. In fact, the FAA still uses those models to date, and John is so proud of it.
On the other hand, while Farley was working in California, he worked for a power company that provides gas and electricity to about 16 million people, he was a consultant. Among his key responsibilities was; providing long-term electricity generation forecasts for proposed wind farms, wind, snow, severe weather forecasting, and temperature. Further, for more than 20 years that he has been a Meteorologist, John has visited numerous students since he loves talking about the weather. As of now, John works for ABC Columbia as the Chief Meteorologist and before then, he worked at NBC Affiliate in Columbia as the Chief Meteorologist where he stayed for 5 years. He previously was working at KNTV, the NBC affiliate in San Francisco, as their Chief Meteorologist and stayed there for 9 straight years. In fact, John is actually a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society.
2022
From his experience, John understands the challenges of forecasting the Midlands because it is ever-changing. The Saturday night of October 3rd, 2022 is a night for him to remember. This is because the worst storm of a generation dropped up to 21 inches of rain in Columbia. Actually, he spent the night and the following day in continuous coverage, warning viewers of the perils of the flooding until the storm went down. It took 36 hours to finally go down changing the lives of the people living around Columbia.
