Howard went to San Diego State University and graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. He was born and raised in Los Angeles. Howard is a 6th-generation Californian having been born and raised in Los Angeles, after he graduated from university, he went to begin his career in Roseburg, Oregon where he worked as an anchor and general news reporter. Within a short time, he was promoted to news director but after 2 years he realized that sports were his thing. He first worked in Rapid City, South Dakota. Later on, he went to California where he worked in San Luis Obispo. He first worked as the weekend sportscaster here before getting a promotion to Sports Director at each of those stations.
While in college, the late Mitch Duncan, mentored him to be who he is today. Mitch Duncan was a well-respected anchor and reporter at News 8. John was an intern at KGTV and KNSD. Outside work, John plays golf, wakeboarding, goes skiing and also rides his motorcycle. He raced so well as a skier, at San Diego State.
