When Karl revealed in 2018 that he was HIV-positive, he ignited a national conversation about the stigma, fear, and misconceptions associated with living with HIV. At the time, Karl posted a picture of himself wearing an AIDS Memorial T-shirt on Facebook with the caption, “I’m a 37-year-old HIV+ man who has been positive for almost ten years. for ten years, I have debated whether or not to come out as +ve to the public, during that time, both the stigma and professionals in the field have advised me against doing so because it will ruin me. “However, consider this. I’m me. I’m the same as you. I want to be loved and accepted because I have a huge heart,” he added.
Schmid believes the most crucial thing we can do is talk and ask questions as Yahoo Life observes National HIV Testing Day, marked annually on June 27th since 1995 to encourage individuals to get tested, know their status, and be informed on prevention and treatment.
In order to start a new dialogue about what it means to be an HIV-positive person and to combat the stigma still attached to the infection, Schmid, a fervent advocate in the battle against HIV stigma, created +Life online in 2019. +Life is available on the recently formed Localish TV network as a part of Localish TV.
