Dave and her children are Carlson’s biggest achievement in life and family time is always her best time. Together, they like to break out to their cabin in Wisconsin to fish, relax, and basically waste some time together. Carlson and her husband also produce a podcast for PCA called My Sports Life for PCA MN where they interviewed athletes like Lou Nanne, Matt Birk, Corey Koskie, and many more about their path to success and overcoming tough odds. After her education at Indiana University Bloomington, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism, she was ready for an experience. Carlson went to South Carolina to get her first job at CBS affiliate WBTW n the Florence/Myrtle Beach market.  She quickly pushed into several big stories in her first two months hired as a weekend producer, covering the crash of flight TWA 800, Hurricanes Bertha and Fran. Later, Kelcey was a one-man band reporter/photographer, shooting and editing her own stories for daily newscasts. After the CBS affiliate, Carlson served at WWMT-Channel 3 Freedom Broadcasting in Kalamazoo, Michigan where she made coverage on various big stories like the 2000 Presidential Election uncertainty in West Palm Beach, Florida, and the execution of Timothy McVeigh.

Kelcey started doing more investigative reporting, earning awards for her stories on the Sex Offender Registry and later became a weekday morning anchor. Her career was spent bulkily at WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina. First hired as a reporter, she moved on to anchor weekend newscasts and then the weekday morning show. Carlson has covered diverse big hurricanes like Hurricane Isabel that devastated the southern Outer Banks. Moreover, she has made coverage of the Duke Lacrosse case and was also in charge of the station’s coverage of the criminal case against John Edwards. She earned Emmy nominations for her enterprise reporting and her work on John Edwards’ criminal case. Furthermore, Kelcey won an Emmy for Best Weekend Newscast and spent 10 and a half years in Raleigh. She also gained experience there covering Federal Courts, Final Four wins, and the Hurricane’s Stanley Cup victory.

Drifting to Minnesota in 2014, she had a great opportunity for her family with FOX 9 as the main evening anchor. Carlson also earned a tip about Prince’s death and was the first reporter to arrive at Paisley Park on the morning of his death. In the bargain, the journalist has field-anchored FOX 9’s coverage and also field-anchored live coverage after the explosion at Minnehaha Academy. At FOX 9, Carlson has covered the Super Bowl in Houston and the Super Bowl in the Twin Cities backyard. Additionally, she has also helped in breaking the news of P.J. Fleck’s hiring at the University of Minnesota with some contacts back in Kalamazoo.

In her leisure time, Carlson is an avid runner, completing 31 marathons to date including 7 Boston Marathons, qualifying three under the men’s timing standard. She also ran Chicago, Berlin, and Grandma’s Marathon, and once won a marathon, the Grandfather Mountain Marathon in Boone, North Carolina in 2011. This was just 4 months after her second child was born. Further, Kelcey has served on the board for Girls on the Run in Kalamazoo and Raleigh and she is currently on the board for The Positive Coaching Alliance in Minnesota.
