Bates was brought up in North Attleboro, Mass, and is a proud Shamrock. She went to Bishop Feehan High School. Later she joined Lyndon State College which is now known as Northern Vermont University. Here, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Television Broadcast Communications with a minor in Meteorology. In addition, she got a seal of approval in broadcast meteorology from the American Meteorological Society. Additionally, she got another seal from National Weather Association.
After graduating from the university, Bates started her broadcasting career in 1996 at WMUR in New Hampshire, she worked as a staff meteorologist and science reporter. She worked there for 4 years then went to Atlanta, Georgia where she created educational weather content for Weather Plus. This is a 24-hour weather and traffic television station broadcasting in the Netherlands. Kelly later came back to New England in the year 2000 joining ABC6 as the weekend night meteorologist. Ever since Kelly has been forecasting for Southern New England.
In September 2021, Kelly left ABC6, Providence, she even posted an emotional Tik-Tok saying “Today my career ended.” She had worked at the station for 17 years until she was forced out. She referred herself to as ”a 49-year-old round woman,” and said it’s safe to say my television career is done,” she wrote on Twitter at the time. But on June 3, 2022, Kelly rejoined ABC6 station WLNE as its weekend weather forecaster where she will be working henceforth.
