Michael Stanley whose full name is Michael Stanley Gee is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and radio personality. He is both a solo artist and a member of a band Michael Stanley Band (MBS). His brand of heartland rock was popular in Cleveland and around the American Midwest in the 1970s and 1980s.

Stanley is the son of Francis Stanley Gee who was born on 16 April 1918  in New Lyme Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio, and Martha Loise Gaolloway Fitzpatrick who was born on 12 February 1922 in East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio. Gee was a radio personality who helped in announcing the Browns and the Barons, debuting all-night music shows, and leading the Rocky River school board. His mother Martha was a teacher who unfortunately died at age 88 in Kent, Portage County, Ohio on 28 June 2010. Likewise, his father F. Stanley also died at age 92 in Dunnellon, Marion County, Florida, on 23 September 2010.

Stanley was surprisingly married four times in his life. He was married to Libby Hill Blake, a teacher, from 1970 until when they divorced in 1990. Michael was also married to Mary McCrone, a television producer, for eight years until they divorced in about 2000. Regardless, he went on and married Denise Skinner, a former marketing staffer in 2002 until her death in 2011 due to cancer. Without stopping, Stanley also married Denise’s best friend, Ilsa Glazberg, an elementary school instructional aide from 2017 until his death in 2021. Additionally, Stanley is the proud father of her twin daughters Anna and Sarah born in 1974, and a grandfather to five.

Stanley Gee graduated from Rocky River High School in 1966 and attended  Hiram College on a baseball scholarship graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 1970. In 1969, while in college, Michael was in the band Silk (originally, Tree Stumps) and released the album, Smooth As Raw Silk on ABC Records. After graduating, he worked as a regional manager for a record store chain and released his first solo album, Michael Stanley in 1973, on Tumbleweed Records. It was produced by Bill Szymczyk and featured Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, Rick Derringer, and Joe Vitale.

Additionally, Rosewood Bitters, its first song became a lifetime fixture in his shows which was later recorded by Walsh in 1985. Michael’s second solo album, Friends and Legends was released in 1973 on MCA Records and produced again by Bill and support from members of Barnstorm and Stephrn Stills’ Manassas. MBS Band (Michael Stanley Band)

The band was formed in 1974 by Stanley Gee along with Jonah Koslen, a singer/ songwriter and lead guitarist, Daniel Pecchio, an ex-Glass Harp bassist, and Tommy Dobeck, a drummer from the band Circus. By 1982, the group had grown into a seven-piece band after several personnel changes. Nicknamed MBS, the band had several attendances at Cleveland area venues like Richfield Coliseum on July 20, 1979, December 31, 1981, and January 1, 1982. MBS’s greatest achievement was in a four-night stand at Blossom Music Center on August 25,26,30 and 31 in 1982.

In 1981, the group had already reached the peak of their popularity nationally, when the single, He Can’t Love from Heartland Album made the Top 40 #33 Billboard and #27 Cash Box. In the Heartland, from the album, North Coast went to #6 in Billboard’s Top Tracks chart. Additionally, He can’t Love You video was the 47th video ever played on MTV and My Town was the last Top 40 hit in 1983. Since 1986, My Town has been played by the Ohio State University Marching Band in Ohio Stadium. Unfortunately, the band dissolved in 1987 with a series of 12 farewells at Front Row Theater in Highland Heights, Ohio in the 1986 to 1987 holiday season. The Last Call Cleveland, a sketch comedy troupe produced Michael Stanley Superstar: The Unauthorized Autobiography pf the Cuyahoga Messiah in 2004 parodying Stanley’s status as a celebrity.

Apart from being a musician, from 1987 to 1990, Stanley was the co-host of PM Magazine on WJW Channel 8 and its follow-up Cleveland Tonight until 1991. Moreover, he also appeared on The Drew Carey Show, playing himself. Stanley has also been the afternoon drive disc jockey for classic rock radio station WNCX in Cleveland since 1990. In 2012, he received the Excellence in Radio award from the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters.
