Whitney (Scott), the daughter of Senator Chase (Shepherd), is being dropped off for her first year of college. Whitney says, “It’s almost like I did that on purpose,” in response to the single mother’s concern about why she chose a school that is so far away.
In the Mindy Kaling-created series, the mother-daughter relationship is one of many endearing bonds, and Shepherd and Scott have gotten close in real life as well. Scott’s first television role is in Whitney, so on set, she looks to Shepherd, a seasoned TV personality who spent seven years co-hosting The View, appeared in Less Than Perfect and 30 Rock, and will launch her own talk show, Sherri, in the autumn. “Sherri, I’m feeling like this. If I start to become worried about anything, I’d go talk to you. What do you think about this?” Scott cites.
