Victor Blackwell Career
Blackwell studied for his Degree at Howard University and earned himself a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism. In 2016 he was named one of the University’s Top 150 Distinguished Alumni. While in college, he worked at WHUT-TV which is Howard University’s public television station. After college, Blackwell worked as a reporter and fill-in anchor at WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, Maryland. Additionally, he also worked as a reporter and weekend anchor at WTLV/WJXX in Jacksonville, Florida. Victor was the first black main anchor at WPBF in West Palm Beach, Florida where he served as an anchor and was honored with several regional Emmy nominations, two Telly awards, Associated Press awards, and honors from the Society of Professional Journalists.
He joined CNN in 2012 as a correspondent, based at CNN’s southeast bureau. In 2013, Blackwell exclusively reported on the mysterious death of Georgia teenager Kendrick Johnson, which led to investigations by the Office of the Secretary of State of Georgia and the US Attorney for Georgia’s Middle District. Blackwell has reported and anchored on the scene for many breaking news stories. These stories include; The coverage of the simultaneous shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma (2017)as well as Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. Concurrently, he covered and reported on the protests following the 2020 deaths of George Floyd and Rashard Brooks.
In 2020 Blackwell received an Emmy award in the category Outstanding News Analysis: Editorial & Opinion for his commentary “‘Infested,’ about President Donald Trump’s description of Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland district.
