At KNDO-NBC in Yakima, Washington, Tran began his career. He earned his B.A. from the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at Washington State University in 1994. His first assignment was NBC Bay Area, where he covered a number of high-profile topics, such as Scott Peterson’s eventual arrest and the search for Laci Peterson as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s bid for governor of California. Will did multiple live shots for MSNBC in addition to providing local coverage of the Peterson story.

He worked as a freelance reporter for KVVU-FOX in Las Vegas in the spring of 2004 and received an Associated Press Breaking News Award for being the first to report that Charles McCoy Jr., the Ohio freeway shooter, had been detained at a casino overnight. Additionally, he broadcast live several times that day for FOX News and numerous big locations, including Los Angeles.

He returned to San Francisco in the summer of 2004 and was working at KRON as one of the morning program reporters. Naturally, there have been lighter stories as well. His coverage of the San Francisco Giants throughout their run to the World Series and a victory parade was among the most entertaining he has done.

Prior to moving to San Francisco, Tran worked as a freelance reporter for KATU – ABC in Portland, Oregon, in 2000. In the Los Angeles area, he was able to say goodbye to the rain and hello to the sun when he was hired as the morning reporter at the Orange County News Channel. In 1998, Tran won the Society of Professional Journalists Business Story of the Year award while working as a reporter at KGMB-CBS in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 1996 to 1999. Prior to Hawaii, he reported for Guam Cable News from 1995 until the fall of 1996 on another island, the U.S. Territory of Guam.
