Shepard was a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force and Reserve. His A-10 squadron was the first Air Force Reserve fighter unit ever to go into combat. In the Gulf War, he flew 52 combat sorties over Kuwait and Iraq. As such, he was awarded six Air Medals for his support of the Coalition Army Ground Forces. In addition, he has flown missions over Bosnia for NATO. Actually, Willard was the first Air Force pilot to openly fly the Soviet Mig-29 fighter. Also working as a staff officer, he examined air operations programs in the United States Southern Command.
Giving Back to the Community
In his effort to give back to the community, Willard assists high school students in obtaining ROTC scholarships and appointments to the USAF Academy for the Air Force Reserve today. In addition, he has been able to fly search and rescue missions and many sorties showing middle and high school students aviation opportunities in the USAF and beyond. He is a member of the USAF Civil Air Patrol. Additionally, he is also an Instructor of the FAA aircraft Advanced Ground and Instrument. Good to note that Willard is also an FAA-certified Unmanned Aerial Systems pilot. He actively gets involved in the community, he works with the Miami-Dade County School Board’s “5,000 Role Models” program. He teaches middle and high school students successful values they need in their day-to-day endeavors.
